Because the stress is distributed across the entire structure, it prevents catastrophic failures. However, secure anchorage is critical—using heavy-duty dynamic self-adjusting piles, seafloor anchors, or heavy elastic mooring lines ensures the platform remains secured in storms.
Yes, our modular pontoons can remain in freezing water throughout the winter. The cubes are engineered with draft angles and curved bottom geometry that cause the dock to pop up on top of the ice when water freezes. However, if there are large blocks of moving ice, the shearing forces could damage stationary installations. In those cases, we recommend removing the dock before the winter freeze.
The main risk from ice is moving water flow. If the ice melts in place or breaks up into small slush pools, the dock handles it easily. However, if your location experiences heavy spring ice flows with large, fast-moving sheets, the ice can shear and damage any stationary dock structure. Under these conditions, the modular system should be unpinned and stored on land during the spring thaw.
The dry draft of the floating cubes is roughly 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) without a load. You can use these systems in shallow mudflats or tidal channels. When the tide goes out, the system safely rests flat on the seabed. It is critical to ensure there are no sharp rocks or debris beneath the structure that could puncture the hulls as the tide drops.
For safe public use and stable footing, walkways should be at least three cubes (1.5 meters) wide. This width provides adequate stability and prevents twisting when people walk near the outer edges. For private access or residential docks with lower traffic, a two-cube (1.0 meter) configuration is suitable.
Under normal marine conditions, high-quality HDPE mixed with proper UV stabilizers typically lasts 15 years or longer. Unlike traditional treated wood, it will not rot, split, rust, or leach chemicals into the surrounding aquatic environment.
