Can the dock remain installed during severe winter icing periods?
Yes, our modular HDPE docks can remain in the water over winter, even in saltwater environments. The shape of individual cubes features tapered, upward-sloping bottom profiles. When surrounding ice contracts, it exerts upward pressure on the floats, causing the dock to pop up on top of the ice sheet rather than being crushed. However, if your location experiences heavy moving ice flows or strong river currents with large blocks of ice, we recommend removing the dock to prevent severe mechanical impact damage.
What is the minimum water depth required for operation?
Because of the low weight of HDPE, an unladen dock section draws only 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) of water. The key operational depth requirement occurs at the transition zones where watercraft drive onto the modules. To allow a jet ski or boat to approach and drive onto a U-dock, ensure there is sufficient depth at the dock's entry point to prevent the hull or prop from hitting the seabed. The system can rest safely on mud or sand during low tides.
What dimensions are required to ensure a stable walking platform?
To ensure stability and prevent rolling under foot traffic, we recommend a minimum walkway width of three modular cubes (approximately 1.5 meters). Individual cubes support about 90 kg (200 lbs) of direct point load without significant tilting. Linking them in a multi-row configuration creates a stable, solid platform suitable for general public walkways, event stages, and industrial access bridges.
